Android 17 Could Introduce Blur Effects to System UI for a Cleaner Look
March 2, 2026
Google is reportedly working on Android 17, and early leaks suggest a small but noticeable change to how the system looks. The biggest visual update could be the addition of a blur effect across parts of the system interface.
According to a report from 9to5Google, Android 17 may replace solid light or dark backgrounds in some system menus with a translucent, blurred design. This means users will be able to slightly see what’s behind system elements, such as wallpapers or app icons.
For example, when you adjust the volume, the pill-shaped volume panel could appear blurred instead of fully opaque. If you open the volume controls while using an app, you may be able to see parts of that app behind the slider. The power menu is also expected to get a similar blur effect.

These blur effects will match your Dynamic Color theme, so they’ll still blend in with your phone’s overall look.
Aside from this visual tweak, most of Android 17’s interface is expected to stay the same.
Google previously introduced blur effects in the notification shade and Quick Settings panel with the Android 16 QPR1 update. The company says this design helps users stay aware of apps running in the background while navigating system controls.
